| The
motivation for Torbjørn Aasen to invent an autonomous
cleaning-machine was the desire for more quality time
for himself and his family. He was simply fed up cleaning
the floor. The dust seemed to grow out of nowhere, and
- he realized - it would never stop.
The
first idea to Robomop came when he saw a rolling toy
(ball) in a gadget shop. The rolling ball moved around
in a fascinating way. He took it home and started to
play with it. (He had to fight his children who tried
to seize upon the funny ball.) A couple of days later
he remembered a game he played when he was a child:
the “Orange-turtle game”. If you put a paper
over an orange and push it, it looks like a turtle stumbling
over the floor. He took a scissors and cut an ordinary
plastic bag, added a Velcro to the lower border and
placed the bag over the ball. He could then attach a
dry microfiber cloth to the Velcro, and - voila - he
had his first version of Robomop ready for testing.
Aasen also won a couple of invention prices for this
item. Boosted with confidence by through these acknowledgements,
he started building the next model. He gave it the working
title “Bowler-hat-model”. The ball was placed
where the head was supposed to be, and the cloth was
fasten under the hat brim. The prototype consists of
a maltreated plastic flowerpot (the top) and a plastic
folio (the brim). At this time Torbjørn also
had signed an exclusive agreement with Gerhard Runshaug,
managing director of DNAH-Group. Gerhard took control
and the adventure of the new exciting cleaning machine,
Robomop, became a reality. You can read how the journey
advances at the Robomop homepage.
Ps.
From time to time you can see Torbjørn resting
on his balcony, enjoying a cup of tea, - while Robomop
cleans the floor silently and eagerly in the background
