While digging through Google, I chanced upon an intriguing Reddit query: What is the difference between the Roomba J7X+ vs J7+? The most plausible explanation I found suggests that QVC (the retailer that sells the J7X+) just put an “X” on the name, and that is all! That said, they are both the Roomba J7+, the pioneer in utilizing Precision Vision Navigation technology for superior obstacle avoidance.

Roomba J7X+ Vs J7+: Differences

The J7X+ and J7+ are, once again, basically the same robot vacuum with a lot of punches from the brand. So, does it deserve to be your next housekeeper? Let’s dissect the details to find out!

Cleaning Performance

Hard Floor≈ 95%
Low-pile Carpet≈ 92%
High-pile Carpet≈ 96%

As you can see, the J7+ performed amazingly at picking up debris on any type of floor. It’s not perfect, and it’s not the one with the best cleaning performance of the Roomba’s lineup either, but the results are quite extraordinary for a robot.

5-inch Strands≈ 72%
10-inch Strands≈ 56%

The J7+ didn’t really pass my hair-picking tests with flying colors, but its dual bristle-less brush rollers were adept at preventing tangles. The rollers can also be removed effortlessly enough to simplify the tasks of detangling and deep cleaning.

Design & Usability

Dimensions & Weight

Dimensions (WxH)13.3 x 3.4 inches
Weight7.49 lbs

The Roomba J7+ is a circle-shaped robot vacuum with dimensions of 13.3 x 3.4 inches and weighing 7.49 lbs. Its obstacle-detecting camera is front-mounted instead of top-mounted, allowing it to navigate under low-profile furniture with greater ease than robots that have their sensors perched on top. This one also comes with a Home Base measuring 15.8 x 13.3 x 11.9 inches that doubles as a charging dock and a self-cleaning station.

Extractor & Side Brush

On the underside of the J7 Plus, you will find a duo of rubberized rollers that rotate in opposite directions to pick up dust and dirt between them and lift them up into a 6.7-inch-wide suction inlet for removal. The standout advantage of these bristle-free rollers is their superior capability to prevent hair from getting caught in them.

There is a side-mounted 3-arm bristled brush that ensures corners and edges are not neglected and guides dust and dirt into the primary cleaning route. However, its brisk rotation speed does have a small downside – I found it to tend to scatter a small fraction of the dust and dirt it encounters.

Navigation

Regarding navigation technology, the J7+ really stands out compared to its predecessors. It still necessitates a few initial exploratory runs to memorize your home’s layout, and once the map is constructed, it becomes accessible via the iRobot app. Akin to its older cousins like the S9 Plus, this one can still remember up to 10 layouts, so as soon as it is on a new floor, it will automatically map out a new layout instead of overwriting existing ones.

The problem is that its navigation camera is front-facing instead of top-mounted. This allows the J7+ to effectively detect and avoid common obstacles, something older Roombas with sensors mounted in a turret cannot do. The real beneficiaries? Just ask those pet owners out there!

The J7+ is quoted as being able to perfectly avoid pet poop every time. iRobot is even so confident about this feature that they backed it up with a promise to replace your robot for free if it accidentally rolls over pet poop. For those sharing their homes with furry friends, this is an offer too good to pass up.

I gave the J7+ a real-world test using faux dog waste, and it performed admirably, skirting around every single one. What’s more, it showcased its ability to identify and maneuver around other commonplace obstacles like a handbag, a shoe, a mug, and a headphone cable I had positioned in front of it. And for the unidentified objects? This good-looking bot photographs them, uploads the image to the app, and leaves the decision-making to you.

PrecisionVision Navigation technology on the J7+ still leaves room for improvement. This one relies heavily on light and can’t operate as well in dimly lit areas as machines with laser-based navigation technology like the Deebot X1 Omni.

Battery Life

Battery Life≈ 98 mins
Charging Time≈ 120 mins

The Roomba J7+ is equipped with a 2210 mAh Li-ion battery and operates in a single power mode. Its battery life won’t win any awards, but it should be sufficient for cleaning small to medium-sized homes in a single charge cycle. This one can drive itself back to the Home Base for recharging and then resume cleaning exactly where it left off.

Control

Manual Control

If you just want to start or stop a vacuuming journey, you can do it by pressing a single button on top of the robot. You can even guide it back to its home base with a long press. Now, you might wonder why this button exists when you can do all those things via your phone or even your voice. Let’s be honest: technology isn’t always reliable, and who knows when your home network might hit a snag?

App Connectivity

Of course, controlling a robot via my phone is still my cup of tea! I mean, who would spend their hard-earned money on a robot vacuum that lacks this nifty feature? The J7+ is compatible with the free iRobot Home app, and you will need to download it to tap into all the wizardry the robot has to offer.

Right off the bat, you can access all the layouts that the robot has memorized, divide rooms, and name them. That way, you can turn on the robot and program it to clean only one or a few rooms instead of going all out on the entire floor. You can even command the robot vocally since the app can work with Amazon Alexa!

You can easily keep the robot out of specific areas by marking no-go zones with red virtual boxes within the app. Conversely, you can pinpoint clean zones for spot cleaning to focus the robot’s attention where it’s needed most. One thing that’s notably absent, however, is the “invisible wall,” a handy feature I’ve found in competitors like Roborock.

Some other useful functions are cleaning schedule, where you can program the robot to automatically start a clean trip on a specific day or time, and robot health, where you can check out the health of the side brush, the roller, and the filter. I also really liked the “Clean While Away” feature, which sets up an invisible boundary around your home – and once you leave the house (don’t forget to take your phone), the robot takes this as its cue to start cleaning.

Cleaning & Maintenance

The J7+ is basically the original J7 but equipped with a self-cleaning base in lieu of a normal charging dock. So every time the 0.5-liter dust bin gets full, this little boy will obediently return home to empty his compartment and pick up where he left off. All the contents will be sent into a single-use dust bag that’s roomy enough to last about two months before requiring a replacement. This eliminates the hassle of manual emptying and ensures that dirt and allergens stay sealed away.

This one uses a HEPA filter, but it is non-rinsable. Nestled inside the dirt tank, the filter can be easily cleaned by giving it a couple of gentle taps against the side of your trash can. The frequency of this minor maintenance will depend on how often you deploy the robot for cleaning tasks.

Other Features

Noise

Working≈ 59 dB
Self-Emptying≈ 72 dB

Prospective J7+ buyers will be pleased to know that the robot itself operates at a fairly subdued noise level, but this one will roar to life when emptying the bin.  Although this loud phase lasts only a few seconds, it could be a deal-breaker for those sensitive to noise, especially during nighttime hours.

Imprint Link

The J7+ is essentially a pure robot vacuum cleaner, so there are no mopping capabilities involved. If you are looking for a mopping robot, I highly recommend the J7+ Combo with a mop pad that can be automatically lifted when the robot detects the carpet.

You can also buy the Braava M6, which also comes from the same manufacturer. These two robots can actually communicate with each other via the Imprint Link feature in the app. Once the J7+ finishes its cleaning trip, the Braava M6 will virtually receive a message `like, “Hey, it’s your turn, boy!”
